Welcome to the Saga March!
In the middle of Norway, 60 km north of Trondheim airport Værnes, you will find the town Verdal and the Sagamarch. The first day of the march is intended to follow the last day of King Olav the Saint and his Army; they walked from Medstugan Sweden to Stiklestad Norway in the year 1030. His enemies came from all over the country, but their chieftains were the mighty lords of Trøndelag and the Northern Norway. King Olav was killed at Stiklestad and lost the battle. But a number of miracles occurring before and after the Kings death turned the defeat into a glorious victory. He became the Holy King to many people throughout Northern Europe. The second day the march is in the area where king Olav fell in the battle at Stiklestad.
In memory of these events the Sagamarch was first organized in 1964, and proved a tremendous success. The number of participants each year has steadily increased to about 1500.
The Sagamarch is a two-day IML march but in order to promote interest in marching and out-door life there are also alternative arrangements, for all who will walk for one day.
The March is approved for IVVs badges and for IMLs medals. We have also medals for the Sagamarch: 1st and 3rd year, small and large bronze. 5th and 7th year, small and large Silver. 10th and 12th year, small and large gold. 14th, 16th and 18th year, medals with white enamel. 20th, 22th and 24th year, medals with yellow enamel. 26th, 28th and 30th year, medals with red enamel. Bronze/Laurels 35th year. Silver/Laurels 40th year. Gold/Laurels 50th year. For all years in between, number are awarded.
Participants walking in the Sagamarch should carry with them personal equipment to meet unexpected weather conditions. Note that 15 miles ( 25 km) of the first days march goes through mountainous terrain.
